Charmed Actresses
Girlfriend March 2002
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gorgeous, talented and funny...who hasn't fallen under the Halliwell spell? We headed to the set to bring you this EXCLUSIVE chat with the gals and to get the inside gossip on what's in store for Charmed this year!
It's 7am and the girls from Charmed have already been at work for more than an hour. Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan - the Power of Three's newest addition - are on set on the suburban Los Angeles set preparing for a long day's shoot ahead.
We're kind of got back into our groove," says Holly. "There was a regrouping, and we had to redefine the chemistry and find out what worked with Rose. It was definitely an adjustment, because we were a pretty well-oiled machine for the last three years."
That well-oiled machine hit a bump in the road last year when Shannen Doherty left the bewitching hit series. Whether she resigned or was sacked is still a taboo subject on the set but rumors of a tiff with Alyssa and an off-screen relationship with Charmed co-star Julian McMahon did the rounds of tabloids around the world.
This year, the cast has moved on and seen determined to put the past behind them. Girlfriend spent the day hanging out on the set as Alyssa, Holly and Shannen's replacement, Rose, gave us an inside peek into what really goes on when the cameras stop rolling.
Alyssa Milano
Wearing pink pjs and ugly boots, Alyssa bounces over between takes and directs GF to the infamous 'attic' where the Book Of Shadows lives and where many of the spells are cast.
Are you enjoying working on the show this year?
You know, we really have the greatest jobs in the world and I'd like to say it's not all that glamorous, but it is. It's a strenuous work schedule but the show is very light and fun. Rose, Holly and I never take ourselves too seriously, that's for sure (laughs)! I love Rose. She has a little doll's face and I'm so glad she's here.
Do you think it was hard for Rose to jump in and be the long-lost half- sister?
It was probably hard for her at first, but she's done a great job. I'm very proud of her.
You work a 12-16 hour day, five days a week. What do you do when the cameras aren't rolling?
On my trailer I have a satellite dish and an internet DSL line, so I like to spend my free time emailing my friends.
Speaking of friends, do you have a whole heap or just a selected few?
I have a couple of girlfriends, but my best friend is a guy. I like to have a close circle of people around me.
You've grown up on television. Do you ever wish you had a 'normal' childhood?
I didn't know any different, so to me it was all normal. The thing I remember most about being a teenager was that I was very pimply and I didn't go to school, so I couldn't really relate to other teenagers very well. I was always around adults, so I was pretty old for my age.
Are you the type of star who has an assistant who does everything for them?
(Laughs) I do EVERYTHING. I go and buy my own toilet paper, I drive myself to the set each day, and I pump my own gas! I do it all.
You've been playing Phoebe for four years now. Do you feel like you've almost become the same person?
There's a lot of me in Phoebe. She can find humor in any situation - which is how I grew up. I really love that Phoebe is almost like an audience member, in that she always expresses what the audience is thinking.
Rose McGowan
Wearing a red mini, black turtleneck top, purple fishnets and stiletto knee-length boots, Rose prefers to chat in her trailer which is decorated in a funky Asian theme. The trailer was formerly used by Shannen, and Rose says she burned sage to give the trailer a good vibe.
How's it all going, being the new cast member?
I'm having a blast and I adore the girls. Its been great so far!
How was your first day on the set?
I went to a ton of different school growing up and I've done a lot of movies where you're working with a bunch of people you don't know, so I was used to it. And I'm kind of fearless witha lot of things.
Can you tell us what Holly and Alyssa are really like?
Holly makes me laugh my butt off because she's like a little old lady in a young person's body. She couldn't really care less about the whole Hollywood thing and I love that about her. Alyssa is quite spiritual and very into her yoga. Sometimes on set I'll look over and she'll have her legs bent over her head in some thingyeyed pose, and I just think, 'There goes Alyssa'!
Alyssa said that you like to make the set very light. What do you do to crack them up?
I love it when they're doing a serious scene and I'm in the background pulling a stupid face, and then they'll start laughing.
Do you like playing Paige?
I like Paige a lot and I've had a lot of input into her character. There was one show where I go back to high school and they wanted me to be kind of freaky looking and have punk- rock hair, and I didn't want to do that.
Why not?
Because I think it says if you're different-looking, then that means you're bad. I don't think who you are is based at all on the outside stuff and I don't like doing stereotypical things.
You were engaged to Marilyn Manson and because of that, some people thought of you as off-beat. Is that how you see yourself?
I don't really care how people view me. If I started thinking about what everyone else thought of me, I'd go crazy.
Holly Marie Combs
Dressed in leather pants and a tee, Charmed's now-eldest sister is the funniest of the three. Although she loves playing Piper and is happy to be an actress, Holly would rather spend a day with her animals then go to a glam premiere!
I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you have a huge following in Australia.
I know! I don't know why! I suppose each of us girls has their own country where they are the most popular.
Did you read all of your fan mail?
I do and this trunk here is full of it. And I get so many letters from Australia, it's really touching.
Any reason why you think Piper is so popular?
My character tends to be the one people relate to, because I think people see her as the most normal. She seems to be the most neutral, too.
Are there any similarities between you and Piper?
Four years later, it's hard to distinguish between the two any more! She's definitely more neurotic than I am. She's got WAY more energy than I do, that's for sure.
You and Shannen were very close. Do you miss her?
I'm still really good friends with her and we still see each other quite a bit. It's funny because she called me the other day and asked me what I was going to wear [to the Ocean's Eleven premiere]. I told her I was going to wear something comfortable and casual, and she was like 'No, no no. You HAVE to get dressed up.' AnD I thought, 'd**n, that's just too bad.'
I take it you're not into clothes then?
Not at all. Our wardrobe girls is going shopping for me, because she doesn't want to leave me to my own devices!
You work from 6am until about 8pm, five nights a week. When do you get a chance to learn your lines?
I read it the morning I come in (laughs). The first year I was doing this, I would read the script about five times and I'd rehearse it two nights beforehand. I've trained my mind to become better at memorizing things and I work better under pressure.
Do you think you're a good witch?
I remember once Shannen and I made a point of reading as much as we could on the subject so that we wouldn't offend anyone. But it's almost impossible not to offend anyone because some Wiccans think we're not accurate enough and then there are others who think we're too accurate and that we're spreading random magical spells.
What do you girls talk about while you're waiting to film a scene?
If you could only hear the random conversation we have together! Rose came in the other day and said to Alyssa, "Do you ever get popcorn down your boobs when you're at the movies?" And Alyssa just screamed
